Editorial Policy

Scarecrow Press publishes scholarly, professional and academic reference books on a variety of subjects. We seek proposals that represent new treatments of traditional topics, original scholarship in developing areas, and cogent syntheses of existing research. Please note that our review process normally takes between three and five months.

Guidelines for submitting a book proposal

  1. Please provide a tentative title. The title should be direct and clearly address the book's subject matter. Clever but vague titles (regardless of how descriptive the subtitle is) are subject to change.
  2. Tell us about the subject matter, scope and intended purpose of your manuscript. In your proposal, also answer the following:
    • What research methods or data sources will you use?
    • Whom do you see as your audience?
    • What would be your potential market for selling the book?
    • What other books exist in your subject area?
    • Has any part of your book been published previously?
    • If you are submitting a doctoral dissertation, what changes are you proposing to prepare it for publication?
    • If this is a proposal for a specific Scarecrow series, please indicate which one.
  3. If you have your completed manuscript, please submit it in whole.
  4. If your manuscript is not finished, please submit at least two complete chapters along with an annotated table of contents (explaining the nature and scope of the unfinished sections).
  5. Please note: If your proposed book is a bibliography, we will need sample annotated entries.
  6. Provide an estimated delivery date of the finished manuscript.
  7. Provide an estimated length (12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, single-sided pages) of your manuscript.
  8. Indicate if your book requires photographs, illustrations, line drawings (including musical examples), or maps. If so, indicate how many you would like to include of each. Are you prepared to acquire written permissions for these?
  9. If you intend to include extensive quotes, are you prepared to acquire written permissions for these?
  10. Please include a recent C.V. or resume listing your credentials and previous publications.
  11. If you would like us to return the materials, include a self addressed envelope, stamped with sufficient postage.
  12. Do not forget to include an accurate email address and phone number where you can be reached.

Make sure you submit all of your proposal materials to the appropriate editor. If you wish to submit a proposal via electronic means, make sure the attachments can be read as Word documents.
