Scarecrow Professional Intelligence Education Series
Editor(s): Jan Goldman, Ed.D.
In the pre-September 11, 2001 era, the term "homeland security" was rarely used in the U.S. Intelligence Community. Since that date, "homeland security" as a field of study has exploded upon the political and academic landscape. Political leaders have sought to grapple with the utilization of intelligence beyond its traditional use in foreign strategy and to include and utilize intelligence in its newly associated role with domestic policy. Law enforcement, and its ability to collect evidence after a crime was committed, was ill-suited to meet the challenge of predicting and intervening prior to an impending action. The transnational threat was both overseas and within our borders. Intelligence education and training exploded as the tradecraft of intelligence work sought to meet the challenges of the new threat.
To meet this demand, colleges and universities began developing and offering programs and courses in homeland security, intelligence analysis, and law enforcement in support of national security. The Scarecrow Professional Intelligence Education Series (SPIES) is designed to improve the required skills for those already in this profession or for individuals studying for careers in intelligence. However, this series was also developed to educate the public and policymakers in how intelligence work is and should be conducted in this important and vital profession. This is the only series of intelligence books that focus on the technicalities, as well as the guiding principles, of conducting intelligence. It is hoped that for policymakers and the public this series will create a realistic impression of intelligence work beyond that which is portrayed by the media. Consequently, this series is aimed at becoming the foundation of professional books that every intelligence professional should have on their bookshelf to be fully qualified to do their job.
The series is shaped by its editor, Jan Goldman, who is a renowned authority in the field and a professor in the intelligence community.
